We are outraged by the insensitive and offensive laboratory rule posted on the website of Professor Clifford Kubiak, Chemistry Department, University of California, San Diego. One of the 6 rules was "Don't believe anything the Chinaman says." Webster's definition of Chinaman is "Chinese -- often taken to be offensive."
Our concerns intensified when Professor Kubiak gave an implausible story in his so called "apology." Although the offensive language had been on his website for 2 years, he claims not to have seen it and that it was posted by another person who remains anonymous. "I am embarrassed by the poor judgment exhibited in posting the offending language. Although I was unaware of the existence of this page until it was brought to my attention..."
How could anyone post laboratory rules on a professor's website without the professor's knowledge? How could a professor not be aware of the lab rules posted on his own website for 2 years? Is that gross irresponsibility? Just the second point may be sufficient to get most academic institutions to reprimand such a professor, not to mention the racist nature of the lab rule.
We demand a full investigation of the claims of Prof. Kubiak by UCSD, involving at least two members of the Chinese American community in San Diego. If he is found lying, there must be very serious consequences. If he is lying, the case is no longer just about a racial slur; he used his professorial position to act out his prejudice against Chinese Americans. He not only offended Chinese Americans, but also used a manufactured story and deceptive language aiming to fool the Chinese American community publicly - adding insult to a racial slur.
If he is telling the truth, we want to know the name of that person and his/her apology to our community and the individual he is referring to. Racial slurs are never funny.
If Professor Kubiak's lab rule were "Don't believe anything the Nigger says.", the administration of UCSD would have most likely issued a profound apology immediately followed by a thorough investigation to ascertain the validity of Professor Kubiak's claim. Webster uses "usually taken to be offensive" in defining "nigger" as well. As things drag out, we are beginning to be alarmed by the attitude of the UCSD administration as well.
